Aids in diagnosing and differentiatin myositis using clinically relevant components
It is advised that patients with the following clinical signs and symptoms should undergo tests for myositis. e.g Muscle pain with inflammation and swelling, Progressive muscle weakness, Joint pain and stiffness, Chest tightness or difficulty breathing, Other respiratory symptoms, Difficulty swallowing.
This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.
Based on the presence or absence of autoantibodies against each of the antigen (Positive or Negative Result) along with the intensity and class of each antibody, the overall result can be determined. The overall result is given as Negative, Borderline, Positive and Strongly positive.
