Helps in confirming the diagnosis for ANA after screening by IFA. Testing detects and measures the presence and amount of ANA in your blood.
Testing for ANAs may be suggested if one has symptoms of an autoimmune disorder. Doctors consider ANA test results along with symptoms, physical exam, and other laboratory tests to diagnose or rule out an autoimmune disorder.
With an ANA screen with IFA, a pathologist will add serum sample to a microscope slide. They’ll add an antibody containing a fluorescent dye to the sample. The fluorescent antibody attaches to the cells in the sample. When a pathologist views the slide under a special microscope, any present ANAs will appear as fluorescent cells.
“This test report includes a negative or positive interpretation, ANA levels, and patterns seen in antibodies during the test. A positive result on an ANA test does not always indicate that you have an autoimmune disorder.”
