Identifies Mycobacteria thus helps proper selection of Anti-tubercular drugs.
You may need this test if you had a positive screening test for TB. A culture can find out if you have active TB or inactive (latent) TB. A TB culture can also help guide your treatment.
In this test, your sample is taken to a lab and put in a growth media to encourage the growth of bacteria. AFB culture can positively confirm a diagnosis of TB or other infection. But it takes 6–8 weeks to grow enough bacteria to detect an infection.
Tuberculosis culture results are negative if no Mycobacterium tuberculosis are found in the culture. Test results are positive if these bacteria are found in the culture. This means you have active TB or another type of AFB infection. Once you have been diagnosed, your provider may order a “drug susceptibility test” on your sample to help determine which antibiotic will provide the most effective treatment.
